PICKLEBALL COURTS UPDATE

In response to all the questions, rumors, and concerns regarding the status of the new Pickleball courts that are under construction  Your board and CLC representativetive set up a meeting with Sandy Seddon (COO) and Shawn Evans (Facilities Director).  After much discussion, we asked why there had been so many delays since the project had started in the summer of 2022 and if there was any estimate of the date when the new courts would be finished.

Shawn reviewed the history of the contract and described all of the surprises discovered by the  contractor underneath the existing bocce ball courts 12 months ago.* including the remains of two old bocce ball courts) These surprises have led to the need to redo the original court plans, dig larger post holes, move the location of the actual court by 30 inches and seek new permits. All of these “surprises” have led to many unexpected delays and the need to ask for new PB court drawings and more permits from the City of Henderson.

After much discussion, many questions and proposals, the following conclusion was reached by the SCA management team. First there is a need to ask the board for more money to complete the courts in the form of a contract change order at the March 28th SCA board meeting. Second, using the existing contractor and their subs to complete the work would be cheaper than hiring a new contractor. The contractor has sent a list of items to the HOA that is needed to get the work on the courts started.  Third, it will not be possible to get an estimated completion date for the new courts until after the new contract is approved at the board meeting and the contractor resumes work. .  These items have been approved by the HOA at their meeting (Thursday March 28, 2024) and work has begun this week.

Sandy and Shawn have promised to update your PB board on the progress of the construction on a bi weekly basis, and I will share that information with our members. The contractor has begun work this Monday and  we hope to  share the new completion schedule with you on April 8th at our next general meeting.  In the meantime, the lower parking area will remain open on a consistent basis unless there is work to be done on the cell tower.  It will be opened ASAP after this work is completed which I am told should be in a few days.  There is additional construction work to be done around the new courts – removal of the sidewalk, digging larger holes and pouring cement for the posts.  I have been assured that access to the temporary courts will be always available. Stay tune for next update.

Club Player Rating System SURVEY

NOTE:  This message is from the NEW 2023 BOARD MEMBERS.  The current Board has no additional details to answer any of your inquiries regarding a club rating system.  All inquiries will be forwarded to the new board for responses.   Thank you for your understanding.

As the sport of Pickleball and our club continues to grow at a rapid rate, more demands are placed on our courts.  We are thankful that we have 8 additional courts on the horizon however, more play demands more organization of court time.  The 2023 Board would like to survey the club members to determine if a player rating system would bring value to our club.  No rating system will be perfect, but it should improve a player's probability of having an equitable match.

Ratings may also be used to organize round robins, meetups, drop-in play, placement in club events and training clinics.  It can help organize some courts for those who seek like skill levels while leaving other courts designated for open play for all skill levels.  Ratings would be based on both self-assessment and skill demonstration and is completely voluntary.  As players improve, they would have an opportunity to be re-rated to a higher level.  At this point, we would request that all club members take a couple minutes and complete the survey.  Survey will be open from December 22 and will close on January 8.  Click here to be taken to the club survey (make sure you are logged into website).  If you have questions, you may use the "Contact Us" feature on website and choose "Club Rating Questions".

Pickleball Club Guest Policies

Several members have brought to the Club's attention that the pickleball courts are being used by guests under the age of 14 or by non-residents not accompanied by a resident.  This violates the SCA Facilities Usage and Scheduling Manual ("FUM"). Please contact the Community Standards Department at 702-614-5820 or 702-638-5751.

Only Pickleball Club members are allowed to play in Club organized and sponsored functions/events, which includes tournaments, meetups, charity events, clinics, and Club court open play.  This does not include beginner orientation, beginner meetups or other functions/events designated by the Pickleball Club Board.

During Club open play, a guest of a Club member who is a nonresident must be accompanied by a Club member, must register and sign a liability waiver at the Liberty Center Monitor's desk before play.  This type of guest is only allowed 5 visits a year for pickleball.  There is currently no fee for guests to use the Club pickleball courts.

During Club open play, a guest of a Club member who is a resident with a valid SCA activity card must be accompanied by a Club member and is only allowed to attend/play 5 times a year on Club courts. After 5 visits, the resident guest must join the Club to continue playing on Club courts.

A non-club member resident with a valid SCA activity card can play at any time on the designated resident courts, currently courts 11 and 12.  A guest of a non-club member resident playing on courts 11 or 12, must register and abide by the FUM's guest policy.

Thank you.
