League Announcement! (Intermediate)

Greetings Intermediate Fun League Players!

Intermediate League begins on Monday, 10/2 at 1:30pm – please be at the courts no later than 1pm so we can go over instructions, process league fees and answer any of your questions.  The league will have 8 female players and 16 male players (24 total) so the format has been slightly revised.  Every player will play 4 matches each week for a potential to earn 44 points/week. Be prepared to pay your league fees of $15 – the Treasurer (Neal Husak) will be present to process your registration. Checks should be payable to Sun City Anthem Community Assoc., Inc.  If you have notified your League Captain that you will miss the first week, please either pay league dues before the start of league, or immediately upon your return.

All requests for subs are to be made at your earliest convenience to the League Captain.  DO NOT arrange for your own sub player.

Good idea to start hydrating before league begins – we will have water available for you to refill your containers along with some snacks.

If you are unable to play league, PLEASE make sure you let us know ASAP so that we can try and back-fill your position BEFORE league begins.  Attached is the league roster.  Rules / Format can be found on club website.

See you on the courts!

Pickleball Marathon Charity Event

We are planning a gigantic pickleball marathon event to benefit three large charities on October 1st. It will be held on all of the SCA courts.  Participants will get to play with a number of different partners over the 7 hour event from 12 noon to 7 pm. Participants will be asked to collect charity pledges to benefit the charities from a variety of local sponsors.

Please save the date and stay tuned for more detailed on how to sign up and the special events we have planned for that day.

Essential Shots Class Lobs

  1. A lofted shot that sends the ball high overhead and deep.
  2. Purpose: To catch the opponent off guard or force him/her back to the baseline (offensive). It can also be effective as a defensive shot to buy time to get into position for an offensive shot.
  3. Offensive: An unexpected lob from the NVZ line over your opponent at the NVZ line or as he/she is running to the net.
  4. Defensive: A lob from the baseline allowing the lobbing team time to move to the NVZ line. However, players must be aware that the opponent may return the lob with an overhead smash (see below). It might be safer to use a drop shot as an approach shot instead.
  5. From the baseline, take a backswing and contact the ball in front of the body with paddle face open to lift the ball and send it high, then follow through fully (paddle at least head high).
  6. The trajectory should carry the ball over the opponent’s outstretched paddle and land inbounds near the baseline.
  7. Lobbing over the opponent when dinking can create the advantage of surprise.

MIXED DOUBLES Cinderella/Handsome Prince Tournament

The Cinderella/Handsome Prince Mixed Doubles Tournament will be held on Saturday, June 3 at 8:15 a.m.

PLEASE DO NOT ENROLL ON LINE. REGISTRATION FORMS, which will need to be placed in the Pickleball Mailbox with your registration fee, WILL BE EMAILED TO ALL CLUB MEMBERS. Once those are received Sheila will enroll all players on line.

Stay tuned as the flyers/registration forms will be emailed before April 25th.

Essential Shots of Pickleball Third Shot Drop

Essential Shots of Pickleball

Third Shot Drops

Every pickleball match begins with a serve and a (hopefully) deep return to the baseline. Each team is trying to take control of the net, so what comes after the return of serve is critical. A common shot, executed by the serving team, is known as the THIRD SHOT DROP SHOT.

Last session we practiced dinking; the third shot drop is basically just a longer dink from back deep in the court.

The drop shot can be one of the most challenging shots to hit consistently since the return of serve usually comes in quickly and is generally placed deep in the court. Keep in mind when you’re practicing this shot that even the most experience pickleball players find it to be challenging.

Here are some simple steps to help you execute a perfect third shot drop:

1. Stay low, bend your knees and get under the ball.

2. Keep your swing path moving low to high.

3. Shorten your backswing – a big backswing will mess with your timing.

4. Give yourself a good margin of error by aiming 4-6 inches over the top of the net.
